Building Social Skills

Teach your child the golden rule: Treat others the way you want to be treated.

Teach your child to show others respect by living a good example.

If you observe your child acting unkindly toward someone, talk to him/her privately about it.

Make good manners standard operating procedure in your home.Courtesy is contagious.

Teach your child the difference between tattling and appropriately informing an adult about a dangerous situation. A good rule of thumb for your child to follow is to tell a teacher whenever he thinks somebody might get hurt or might hurt somebody else. Discuss scenarios with your child and if he/she should tell an adult or let others work out the situation.

Teach your child to embrace diversity. Do not allow racial slurs, jokes about people with disabilities or other rude remarks to be tolerated. Teach your children that difference is what makes their world a special and interesting place.

Never give your child permission to hit another person. If necessary, teach your child to protect himself, but not to fight. Talk with him/her about alternative ways to resolve conflicts.

Under no circumstances allow your child to be bullied. Teach your child to avoid bullies and get help from an adult when being bullied. Inform the teacher if your child has a situation that you feel the teacher is not aware of.

Discuss the word RESPECT and how respecting oneself and others makes the world a nicer place.
